Hope Newfound Clarity Pat M Kuras 9781511577205 Books Reviews

There is so much strength in this little book. Its power rests in the author’s courage to tackle and depict alcoholism unflinchingly, with such clarity, intelligence, and grace. The poems are all interrelated, ultimately forming an overall narrative arch one that begins with the pleasure and joy of drinking (the community of drinkers and bartenders), then confronts the reality of alcoholism (i.e. how it destroys lives and human relationships, see "The Blackout Poem"). But this story concludes with hope and redemption, as the protagonist ultimately finds sobriety, humility, and grace. Favorite poems “Escapist,” “Poem for a Bartender,” “Soldier,” “The Blackout Poem,” and “Serenity.” This is such a powerful, courageous book.
Each poem and the book as a whole is Strikingly real, authentic and filled with simple eloquence. I felt her life's journey in every poem. Inspiring and beautifully expressed
These poems are short, sweet and go directly to the reader's heart. Kuras has mastered the art of combining simplicity with profound truths about life. After reading this book, I feel that she has shared from her life experience with honesty and self-acceptance. But, perhaps more important to the reader, is that she is a skilled poet!
When Sharon Olds released The Father, I insisted that it was the first complete memoir presented as a book of poems. What made that volume so interesting was that as it followed a narrative structure, each piece stood nicely on its own.
While Pat M. Kuras’s HOPE Newfound Clarity is quite short (consisting of 15 poems), it does much the same, giving readers a short but intense voyage that travels the arc of the alcoholic from descent to depravity to recovery. Each poem is a chapter of her journey to sobriety and self-realization that begins with brutal foreshadowing as a group of “RNs, Philadelphia, 1981” gathers to “listen to the jukebox/Billie Holiday/singing to our souls” and titles such as “Not a Banner Year” and “Detox”
In “Poem for a Bartender,” she notes how “Like a lemming, I rush to you/dollars dropped as readily as/my will.” By the time she shares her own “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre,” the reader is ready for the bottoming out in “The Blackout Poem” as Kuras recalls the humiliation of being “at the bar/one moment,/suddenly home the next.”
A brutal journey—as it should be given its subject matter, Pat Kuras’s confessional work closes (fittingly) on a note of “Humility” and her own take on the notion of “Serenity.”
Must read for a poetry lover and or survivor of addiction
